Heathkit
VHF-1 Seneca: The Seneca is a 2 meter and 6 meter CW and Phone transmitter,
it uses a 2e26 driving a pair of 6146's. On 6 meters it has an input of
140 watts on CW and 120 watts on AM. On 2meters the input 110 watts CW
and 95 watts AM. I bought this one from a guy who was selling out his collection
of both Amateur and BC bands radios, parts, and test gear. I was told nothing
about this transmitter when I bought it, so I did not know if it worked
or if it did not. If it did not, I had no Idea of the history of any troubles
that might be waiting for me.
I got it on the bench and gave it a quick look over., I did not see anything that looked like trouble, so I powered it up, now I found what was wrong. First thing I noticed was that it did not tune up any where near they way it should have. The VFO did not seem to work, and the frequency output was way out of band on 6. To make a long story short the 6 meter tank coil had broken away from the tab on the band switch. Also the finals Nutralization needed to be set. Other than that it seems to be working very well now, the audio quality is very good, and the transmitter has full output on both bands. Now I am just not sure what I am going to do with it. Sell it? keep it? I need another 6 meter rig like I need a whole in the head, but once I go to the trouble to fix a rig, I always hate to sell it.
